About Sally Bathgate
Experience
With a life-science qualification (BSc UNSW - Hons 1), and nearly a decade of experience in the pharmaceutical industry (Regulatory Affairs), I know how to write medical and health content for a broad range of audiences, from clinicians to consumers.
A Regulatory Affairs professional needs excellent medical communication skills. Writing reports, summaries and presentations for a range of audiences.
We also need to have a keen eye for detail and compliance. We’re tasked with reviewing promotional material, ensuring compliance with the advertising requirements of Medicines Australia and the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA).
I bring all of these skills into my medical and health writing.
During my career I have worked on products across a huge range of therapeutic areas including:
Haematology
Oncology
Cardiovascular
Pain
Mental health and illness
Women’s Health
Baby health

My Story
Medical and health writing is a niche area, to be sure: it’s not what I imagined doing when I grew up. Most medical writers find their way to this niche career after a circuitous journey. I’m no different.
I started out with a BSc (Hons 1) in Pharmacology from the University of NSW.
Wide eyed and hopeful - I continued my journey at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research investigating the mechanism of action of paracetamol. I then went on to work for nearly 10 years as a regulatory professional in the pharmaceutical industry.
During my time in industry, I honed my writing and communications skills. I prepared presentations, reports, summaries, product information, and Consumer Medicine Information (CMI).
Writing and testing CMI helped forge my enthusiasm for writing health literate information for everyday people. I’d happily bend your ear about information design and quality written content for a few hours!
My writing experience is not limited to the health sector. After living in Jordan for three years 2014 -2016, I co-authored a very special book: Tea & Thread: portraits of middle eastern women far from home. It was a privilege to share the stories of precious women seeking refuge from conflicts in the Middle East.
Launching my freelance writing business, Generate Health, in 2019 joined two things that had always been slightly disparate. As a writer with a wealth of experience in pharmaceuticals, medical and health writing beckoned.
And I am delighted to be here to help you with your next project.
